boygenius (stylized in all lowercase) is an indie rock group formed in 2018 by American musicians Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus.[2][3] Their self-titled debut EP boygenius was written and recorded in four days at Sound City Studios in Los Angeles.[4][5]

History

As three up and coming indie musicians, the three members of the band began communicating through the internet and texts. They swapped musical ideas and ended up touring together.[6] Although Baker had toured with Dacus and Bridgers individually, they had not completed a tour as a trio.[7] After they arranged for this group tour, they decided to create an EP under the name Boygenius.[8] On March 19, 2020 the song "Roses/Lotus/Violet/Iris" by Hayley Williams was released featuring the trio in lieu of Williams releasing Petals For Armor II, the second in her album series of the same name. Dacus and Baker contributed vocals on two tracks of Bridgers' 2020 album Punisher, and Bridgers and Dacus contributed vocals to Baker's 2021 song "Favor" from her album Little Oblivions

Band name

The group has been very vocal about the origins of the band name. They cite past experience with an overly confident man who had been given the title 'boy genius' since about 2015, and used the confidence they had seen from him to be bold when creating their EP.[7][9]
