Hartebeestfontein Mine was acquired by Target Exploration Limited a subsidiary of Anglovaal on October 1996. Target Exploration Limited name changed to Avgold Limited. On 21st July 1997 18 mineworkers died at Shaft no. 4 of Hartebeestfontein Mine.). The Hartebeestfontein Mine is a large mine located in the northern part of South Africa in Gauteng. Hartebeestfontein represents one of the largest uranium reserves in South Africa having estimated reserves of 641 million tonnes of ore grading 0.007% uranium.[1]
