Tobias Christopher Collyer (born 3 January 2004) is an English professional footballer who plays as a Defensive midfielder for Manchester United.

Club career

Early career

Born in Worthing, Collyer began his career in Brighton & Hove Albion’s youth system at under-12 level and made his under-18s debut at the age of 15.[3]

He went from strength to strength after a six-minute cameo in 2019, establishing himself as a key player in 2020-21 as Brighton finished third in Premier League South and won the Premier League under-17s Cup.[3]

He made his under-23s debut a week after his 17th birthday, playing the full 90 minutes against Tottenham Hotspurs in January 2021.[3]

Manchester United

Youth career

In March 2022, he joined the Manchester United Academy.[4] United signed him on a three-and-a-half-year deal after he failed to agree terms of a new contract with Brighton & Hove Albion. He had impressed during his trial with United the previous month.[5]

He made a strong impression during his first season, playing for United in the under-21 team in Premier League 2 and appearing twice against the first-team side in the EFL Trophy. He also made three appearances for United's U21.[1]

2023–24 season

Collyer was included in Manchester United's first-team's opening pre-season squad to face Leeds United on 12 July 2023 in Oslo, but did not make it onto the pitch.[1][6] He finally made his first-team debut in the starting eleven as Manchester United lost to Wrexham 3-1 on 26 July 2023 in San Diego, California on their USA Tour pre-season.[7]

International career

At international level, he has captained the England National Team at under-16 and under-17 levels.[3]

Style of play

Former Brighton under-18 coach, Mark Beard praised his work ethic, attitude and abilities. Beard told the SussexLive, “He is a pleasure to coach. He is so low maintenance, what I mean by that is you don’t know he is there. He gets on with his job. He regularly put in displays of 8/10 at the least.” “He had the best running stats, runs 13 kilometres a game, breaks things up. He is so unassuming, he gets on with his job. “You want 11 of these type of players in the team. You know what you’re going to get in training, he works hard, he wants to improve, he’s intelligent. He’s a good all-round kid.” “As defensive midfielders go, and it is quite a disciplined role, he is probably the best in the country at doing it.”[8]
