Rewind is a 2023 Philippine science fiction romantic drama film directed by Mae Cruz-Alviar from a screenplay by Enrico C. Santos and Joel Mercado, based on an original story by Santos. It was loosely based on If Only. It stars real-life couple Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera, in their first film together since You to Me Are Everything in 2010, in the lead roles, with the supporting cast includes Coney Reyes, Ariel Ureta, Pepe Herrera, Joross Gamboa, and Ina Feleo.

Produced and distributed by Star Cinema, in association with Agosto Dos Media and APT Entertainment, it serves as Marian's second film project and Dingdong's eighth film project for the film studio. It also marks the second film collaboration of Dingdong Dantes with director Mae Cruz-Alviar, with whom they worked together in the film She's the One ten years prior.

The film revolves around a man who is given a chance to go back in time by a day to save his relationship with his wife.[2]

It was released on December 25, 2023, and is one of the official entries for the 49th Metro Manila Film Festival. It has grossed ₱600 million, becoming the highest-grossing film in the Philippines of 2023.

Plot

The film begins with the younger versions of John Nuñez and Mary being paired together for a dance class in their elementary days. John is depicted as a grumpy boy with a tender loving heart while Mary is depicted as a happy-go-lucky girl. As soon as both had grown up as adults, they eventually get married and have a son named Austin.

John and Mary's relationship had become rocky due to John's priorities shifting away from his family. Instead, he focused more on getting promoted at work by his godfather at the wine company he currently works at. During his godfather's birthday, the promotion he was supposed to achieve was given to Vivian, much to his disbelief. He angrily confronts his godfather for choosing Vivian over him and he replies with the reason behind the decision, stating that his horrible temper was the cause, causing John to resign. He then enters his office and throws a tantrum. Shortly thereafter, he is met by Vivian who gives him a drink refill and in return, gives her a goodbye kiss shortly before leaving, not knowing that Hannah had filmed the entire scene. He briefly calls his estranged father, Nestor, before hanging up as soon as he answered the phone. Upon returning home, he sees his son awake convincing him to watch his piano recital for the following day which he accepts.

The following day, both John and Mary dress up for their son's recital and have an argument while on the road. The fight quickly turns for the worse however once Mary learns that John had resigned from work and that he had cheated on her by giving Vivian that kiss. She decides to leave him by trying to get outside the car, to John's refusal. Whilst this was happening, he nearly hits a man crossing the street resulting in him losing control of the car and bumping into a tree upon impact. Surviving the crash, John immediately takes his wife to the hospital in desperation. It was ultimately too late however, as Mary was declared dead on arrival at 3 PM. In his wife's funeral, all he could say in his eulogy was him apologizing for the accident as he could not bring himself to speak about her, resulting in John having an emotional breakdown.

After his mother takes Austin to her home, John meets Lods, a man posing as an electrician named Jess who is actually God. Lods makes an offer that John cannot refuse, the ability to go back in time before the day of the accident, with the catch that somebody else has to die in place of Mary. John offers to take his wife's place and the two make the deal. John gets transported back in time to his godfather's birthday and finally accepts Vivian's promotion. He also refused to be kissed by her in his office by pushing her away because of this once-in-a-lifetime chance to fix his mistakes and leaves like normal. He reconciles with his estranged father, accepting his forgiveness. He gives him a watch which John would later give to Austin as a gift. Later in the evening, John takes Mary to the park where he proposed to her and soon after they repaired their relationship.

On the day of the recital, John learns that Mary decided to study culinary school abroad in Singapore and confronts her. He learns that she's also bringing Austin with her since he qualified in a music academy there as well. This causes John to get mad at Mary for not bringing this to his attention sooner. He angrily confronts Lods for "tricking" him, but Mary stops the fight and calls Lods by Jess, telling John that they need to go. On their way, he prayed for Mary's safety, much to her confusion. They almost bump a man crossing the street and ended up in a reversal, saving themselves from causing the accident. They arrive on time to watch their son's piano recital and enjoy the show. During the performance however, John looks at the time to see that it is nearly 3 PM, this causes him to leave the theater abruptly where he sees Lods standing in the doorway. John begs Lods for a life extension in order to live with his family, but he refused due to the deal that they agreed upon. Lods tells him that both his wife and son decided to live in his honor once he dies, resulting in John reluctantly going through with the deal to go with God. Now as a spirit, he sees that Austin comes to his side revealing that he died from a heart attack. Mary arrives shortly thereafter to see her son and was devastated over the loss of her husband. In John's funeral, Mary made a eulogy about the love she gave to her husband.

Several years later, both Mary and Austin gained outstanding achievements throughout their careers. Austin now has a family of his own as an adult and they visit his mother, Mary, shortly before leaving. Mary carries the photo frame of her late husband John, remembering and performing the dance from their childhood and later adulthood. The film ends with Mary's commitment to never forgetting her late husband and the love she gave to him.
