Takalarup (post code 6324[1]) is a small township belonging to the Shire of Plantagenet in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, it lies to the East of the Porongurup Range and South of the Stirling Range, being approximately 40km E from the town of Mount Barker, and approximately 50km NNE from the City of Albany. Takalarup is predominantly dedicated to agriculture with its highly fertile land and reliable winter/spring rains meaning the area is ideally suited to the growing of grain crops.[citation needed] Takalarup is also renowned for the diversity of orchids that can be found at varying times of the year.[citation needed]

Takalarup is home to Severe Storms Research (SSR), a self-funded meteorological research organisation founded by Kris Wetton in 1998.[citation needed] SSR is primarily dedicated to in-field research surrounding Deep Moist Convective events (Severe Thunderstorms) and Cold-core tornadic events.[citation needed]
