As of March 2017, the town has an estimated population of 2,598[1] and a density of 35 persons per km². The total area is 74.09 km².

Yasuoki Tashima, the former mayor of the town, brought national and worldwide attention when he applied to host Japan's high level nuclear waste repository in Tōyō.
