South Central Conference (Iowa)
The South Central Conference is a high school athletic conference in Iowa. Made up of mid-sized 2A and 3A schools, the conference currently has six members, five of which are based in their respective county seats. Because of the lack of student population in southern Iowa, most of the schools are the lone district in their county, or are flanked only by very small schools. Prior to the mid-1990s the conference included many larger schools, including Indianola High School and West Des Moines Valley, which now compete in the Central Iowa Metro League.
At the end of the 1995-1996 school year the members were Albia, Centerville, Chariton, Davis County (Bloomfield), Grinnell, Knoxville, Oskaloosa and Pella. The conference folded at the end of that year due to the smaller schools wanting to play schools closer in enrollment.
Albia, Centerville, Chariton and Davis County (Bloomfield) reformed the league by adding Eddyville-Blakesburg from the Des Moines River Conference and Clarke (Osceola) from the Little Hawkeye Conference.
In 2014, the South Central Conference made some noise in the state tournament with the talented teams of Chariton (Class 3A) and Albia (Class 2A). Both teams would eventually end up losing in the opening round at Wells Fargo Arena to the eventual state champions in both Class 2A and Class 3A.
In the 2014 academic school year the conference added Knoxville, which had formerly played in the Little Hawkeye Conference. This makes a seventh member in the conference.
In 2016, the Chariton Chargers (Class 3A) made it back to the state tournament at Wells Fargo Arena. They ended up going 1-2 at the tournament and finished fourth place in Class 3A.
