Maho Kuwako (桑子 真帆, Kuwako Maho, born May 30, 1987) is a news presenter at NHK, Japan's public broadcaster. She is currently an anchor of NHK's morning news show NHK News Ohayō Nippon. She served as the assistant to Tamori in NHK's Bura Tamori, a geographic television series, between April 2015 and April 2016.

Early years

Born in Kawasaki, Japan, Kuwako was raised and educated in the area. She graduated from School of Language and Culture Studies of Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS), where she majored Czech language.

Career

After graduating from TUFS in 2010, Kuwako was hired by NHK. She started her career at NHK Nagano Branch, where she served three years as a temporary correspondent and a navigator of some local TV programs. Then she was relocated to NHK Hiroshima Branch. Waratchao!, one of preschool programs, is her debut program where she starred on a regular basis.

In April 2015, Kuwako was reassigned to Tokyo Announcement Room and appointed as an assistant for NHK's travel program Bura Tamori, which helped grow her popularity. At the same time, she became a newscaster for some news shows, such as NHK News 7 and Shutoken News 845.

In April 2016, Kuwako became an anchor for News Check 11 with Yoshio Arima until 2017.

In April 2017, Kuwako and Arima were appointed as anchors for News Watch 9.

NHK announced on February 13, 2020, that Kuwako would be stepping back from News Watch 9 and move to NHK News Ohayō Nippon in April 2020. The anchor for News Watch 9 was handed over to Mayuko Wakuda, who was at that time one of the anchors for NHK News Ohayō Nippon.[1][2]

On March 20, 2020, Kuwako became an anchor for NHK News Ohayō Nippon.

Personal life

Kuwako got married with Shinichi Tanioka, a Fuji Television announcer, on May 30, 2017, the very day of her 30th birthday.[3] The Sankei Sports newspaper wrote that Kuwako was divorcing Tanioka just one year after their marriage.[4]
