San Pedro is the capital of Montes de Oca Canton in the San José Province. It is home to the University of Costa Rica,[1] Universidad Latina de Costa Rica,[2] and other institutions of higher learning.

Since the city is very close to San José it is considered part of the whole metropolitan area. Residential and commercial development is very high and commercial buildings are slowly taking the place of previous quiet suburbs.
