The museum opened in 1922, in a building that was formerly Noble's Old Hospital. It was expanded and remodeled during 1986–89.[1]

The museum serves as headquarters of Manx National Heritage.[1]

The museum bears no relation to the institution with the same name formed by Trevor Ashe in 1825.
