John Wallwork CBE FRCS FMedSci (born July 1946), is a retired cardiothoracic surgeon and emeritus professor who performed Europe's first successful combined heart-lung transplant in 1984, and in 1986 performed the world's first heart-lung and liver transplant with Sir Roy Calne.[1][2][3]
Early life
John Wallwork was born in July 1946.[citation needed]
He attended Accrington Grammar School (since 2008 the Accrington Academy) in Lancashire. At the University of Edinburgh he gained a BSc in pharmacology in 1966, then a degree in medicine in 1970 (MB ChB).[citation needed]
Career
From 1975 to 1976 he was at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and then at the Adelaide Provincial Hospital (Eastern Cape) from 1977 to 1978. He spent the following year at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary, then subsequent year at St Bartholomew's Hospital in London.[citation needed]
At Stanford University School of Medicine he worked in Cardiovascular and Cardiac Transplant Surgery from 1980 to 1981.[citation needed]
Papworth Hospital
From 1981 to 2011 he worked at Papworth Hospital, being Director of Transplantation from 1989–2006. He worked with Sir Terence English, who had performed the UK's first heart transplant at Papworth in January 1979.[citation needed]
In 2014, he became Chairman of Royal Papworth Hospital.[4]
He was President of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT) 1994–1995.[5][6][7][8]
Personal life
He married Elizabeth Medley in 1973; they have a son and two daughters. He was awarded the CBE in the 2012 New Year Honours.
