The 1972 Sacramento State Hornets football team represented Sacramento State University[note 1] during the 1972 NCAA College Division football season.

Sacramento State competed in the Far Western Conference (FWC).[note 2] The Hornets were led by head coach Ray Clemons in his twelfth season. They played home games at Hornet Stadium in Sacramento, California. The team finished the season with a record of two wins and eight losses (2–8, 1–4 FWC). Overall, the team was outscored by its opponents 107–188 for the season.
