Samuel Thomas Turpin (born 2 September 1995) is a South African rapper, producer and musical artist.[1] He is a son of South African photographer and activist Gisèle Wulfsohn.[2] He is a member of The Charles Géne Suite ensemble[3] which includes his hip-hop group Cold Chinese Food[4] with producer ILLA N.
Biography
Turpin was born in Johannesburg in 1995. Growing up in post-Apartheid Johannesburg in the early 21st Century, he was exposed to a variety of cultural influences including rap music and hip-hop culture[5]. He began experimenting musically during his high school years with some friends but was never serious, however, until his mother died from cancer in 2011[6]. He soon began to use music to overcome depression and express his emotions[7]. He is of Jewish and mixed Irish/French descent[8].
Music career
In early 2013 Turpin released his first single "Cranes" online and some initial interest in his music saw him start to perform around Johannesburg.[9] In early 2014 he released his debut EP "Eternal Sentiment", a limited online release.[10] Turpin released his second EP "Wasi-Wasi" accompanied by some self-produced music videos.[11] In 2017 he released his first full-length mixtape "4am In Jozi", a musical ode to the night-time anxieties of central Johannesburg.[12] The project garnered Turpin a brand showcase[13] of selected artists as well as fashion-oriented placements in the South African creative industry.[14] He began to reconnect with members of The Charles Géne Suite, some of whom were childhood friends including longtime collaborator ILLA N and primary school mate Noah Bamberger.[15]
In early 2019, Turpin released the first single since his mixtape, a song titled "Summer Evening" featuring London-based India Shan, which plays like a personal letter to his mother.[16] According to Turpin, this was the first time he was able to express himself "directly" to his mother since she died.[17] This was followed by "Sahara Flow", a single drawing more from his Jewish heritage, sampling an ancient Hebrew chant sang by South African singer Jessica Sherman.[18] In late 2019, Turpin joined the live ensemble of The Charles Géne Suite and began performing at festivals, club shows and events.[19]
In mid-March 2020, during South Africa's coronavirus lockdown,[20] Turpin and collaborator Lenny-Dee Doucha released their single "Cloud City" specifically for their followers in lockdown.[21] In May 2020, Turpin collaborated with film maker Katya Abedian[22] to release their short musical film "Sahara Flow" which premiered via London's Nataal Magazine.[23]
Personal life and education
In 2017 Turpin received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of the Witwatersrand, majoring in Anthropology and History.[24] He is studying at the Academy of Sound Engineering in Johannesburg.[25]
Turpin is fluent in English, isiZulu and also knows some basic French and Japanese.[26]
