The Observer described the book as "expertly and intricately plotted, with a story spiralling into disaster and a satisfyingly huge amount of double crossing, [which] certainly doesn't feel like a first novel".[3]
The Expats was a finalist for an L.A. Times Book Prize and won the 2013 Edgar Award for best first novel by an American author[4] It also won the 2013 Anthony Award for best first novel.[citation needed]
