Franz Gareis (1775–1803)[1] was a painter born in Marienthal who studied at Dresden under Casanova. Afterwards, he went to Rome, where his picture of Orpheus in the Lower World gained him a considerable reputation. He died in Rome at the age of twenty-seven.
