The College of Law of Recife, now called College of Law, Federal University of Pernambuco (formerly in Portuguese Faculdade de Direito do Recife and now Faculdade de Direito da Universidade Federal de Pernambuco), is a law school in the city of Recife, Pernambuco state, Brazil.
History
It is one of the first superior education centres created in Brazil; it was created (together with the Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de São Paulo) on August 11, 1827 by an imperial law of Dom Pedro I, of Brazil. It was first located in the city of Olinda but since 1854 it moved to Recife. Since 1912 it is located in its own palace at the praca Dr. Adolfo Cirne downtown in Recife.
Since its beginning the Faculdade de Direito do Recife was important not only for graduating bachelors in law but also for being a centre of excellence in philosophy and humans sciences. It had glorious times under the influence Tobias Barreto, Joaquim Nabuco e Castro Alves. It is one of the most important superior education centres in Brazil. [citation needed]
Between 1860 and 1880 a social, philosophic, intellectual movement known as "Escola do Recife" (The Recife's school) influenced the positivist philosophy and it understanding. Many of the most remarkable Brazilian politicians, poets, and lawyers studied there such as Tobias Barreto, Sílvio Romero, Artur Orlando, Clóvis Beviláqua, Capistrano de Abreu, Graça Aranha, Martins Júnior, Faelante da Câmara, Urbano Santos, Abelardo Lobo, Vitoriano Palhares, José Higino, Araripe Júnior, Gumercindo Bessa e João Carneiro de Sousa Bandeira, Castro Alves, Pinto Ferreira, Clodomir Cardoso.
It graduation course has around 970 students and has the excellency award from the OAB - Ordem do Advogados do Brasil (Order of the lawyers of Brazil). The Faculdade de Direito do Recife has one of the most important juridical library in Brazil, with more than 100,000 books, many of them rare.
