Sportskeeda is sports news website that was founded in 2009[1]. Majority stake in the website was acquired by gaming firm Nazara Technologies in 2019 for Rs. 44 crore INR.[2].

The Sportskeeda website has news, features, commentary and videos on sports like football, cricket, hockey, tennis, basketball and kabaddi. Its operations are managed by the incorporated organization Absolute Sports Private Limited.[3]

History

Sportskeeda was founded by its current Chief Executive Officer Porush Jain in association with his fellow sports enthusiasts Anshu Prasad and Robin Chhabria[4] as well as Srinivas Cuddapah[5].

The name of the website is derived from a colloquial Hindi term that is the sporting equivalent of the word ‘bookworm’; ‘Sportskeeda’ literally translates to ‘sports worm’ in English.

The website was initially run from the office of Jain’s father in Noida, but moved its operations to Bangalore in 2011. Sportskeeda was backed by venture capital funding in its initial years. Seedfund, an organization that funds early-stage ventures, had invested Rs. 2.8 crore into Sportskeeda in 2011[6].

Content and contributors

Sportskeeda’s content is procured from a variety of sources; the site accepts and publishes articles contributed by its community of writers[7]. Sportskeeda claims to publish around 150 articles every day[8]. Some of the well-known names who have written on the site include Raphael Honigstein[9], Hemang Badani[10], Mohammad Kaif[11] and Jonathan Wilson.

The website also has an Android app, which has over 500,000 downloads[12].

Sportskeeda has active accounts on Facebook and Instagram, which occasionally host live interactions with prominent personalities from the sporting world. The likes of Ian Bell, Kuldeep Yadav, Vijender Singh and Bhaichung Bhutia have featured on their ‘SK Live’ segment so far.

Wrestling coverage

Sportskeeda has developed a following in USA through its pro wrestling content[13]. The website covers promotions like WWE, NJPW, AEW, Impact Wrestling, ROH and smaller independent promotions.

Some of the notable pro wrestling names that have been interviewed by the website include Braun Strowman, Triple H, Kenny Omega, Kane, Drew McIntyre, Matt Hardy and Jinder Mahal. Sportskeeda also produces a weekly podcast called Dropkick DiSKussions which features exclusive interviews with top WWE, Impact and AEW stars.

Reach

Sportskeeda has a global Alexa traffic rank of 6,160 as of October 2019[14]. The site’s monthly user base is approximately 25 million[15]. Sportskeeda also has partnerships with browsers and mobile OEMs[16], which publish the website’s content on their platforms.
