Manger Church (Norwegian: Manger kyrkje) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Alver Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the village of Manger on the island of Radøy. It is one of the four churches in the Radøy parish which is part of the Nordhordland prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Bjørgvin. The white, wooden church was built in a long church style in 1891 using designs by the architect Hans Heinrich Jess who was from Bergen. The church seats about 440 people.[1][2]
History
The earliest existing historical records of the church date back to the year 1350, but the stave church was likely built in the 12th century. Around the year 1600, the old church was heavily renovated and expanded. In 1724, the church was sold by the state to the local parish priest, Hans Withe. On 18 January 1738, a lightning strike hit the church and the structure burned down. A new stone church was completed in 1743, and it was consecrated on 5 November of that year. Again in 1822, the church caught fire by a lightning strike, but the damage was not severe and it was quickly repaired. In the mid-1800s, the church was sold back to the municipality. In 1891, the old church was torn down and replaced by a new wooden one. The new church was consecrated on 27 October 1891.[3][4]
