The fraternities and sororities of Dalhousie University are well established and active in the Halifax community. Despite their relative prominence, though, none are officially recognized as Dalhousie student societies. This can be attributed to the non-discrimination policy adopted by the Dalhousie Student Union (DSU), which stipulates that societies may not bar any student from membership based on gender or sex, which is inherently part of the culture of fraternities and sororities found at Dalhousie and elsewhere. Some fraternities, like Phi Chi Medical Fraternity at Dalhousie, allow both sexes to become members.

In an effort to remain active and unified on campus, a number of fraternities and sororities collectively formed the Greek Council, which due to the joint presence of males and females in its membership was able to become a ratified society under the DSU.

Halifax Greek Council (also referred to as Halifax Greek Life) is an official student society made up of fraternities and sororities that have charters/ and or at least 10 active members at Dalhousie University. Halifax Greek Council is the official representative body that oversees the affairs and concerns of all fraternities and sororities at Dalhousie University and it’s affiliated bodies.

Headed by an executive board, Halifax Greek Council makes recommendations on standards and dates for Greek Life on and off-campus and serves as a representative for Greek organizations. They provide an open forum for all Greek members to discuss issues and help plan campus activities while promoting unity among all Greek members and organizations.

Greek Letter Organizations (GLO’s) unite students at Dalhousie University, the University of King's College, Saint Mary's University, Mount St. Vincent University and other members of the Halifax community. In addition to the social opportunities presented by these connections, Halifax fraternities and sororities promote an active, balanced lifestyle of academics, leadership, and community service/philanthropy.

Members of Greek organizations strive to maintain high grades, to volunteer in the local community, and to get involved and be leaders in other campus organizations.

As part of the official GreekLife recruitment season, most organizations have formal recruitment events in September and January each year. Halifax Greek Council recognizes and values the benefit of undergraduate fraternal organizations. Greek-letter organizations with recognition at Dalhousie University as part of the Greek Council are founded on the principles of scholarship, leadership, service and cultivating positive and meaningful bonds of brother/sisterhood. Halifax Greek Council's partnership with national and international headquarters helps to convey the importance of, and hold members accountable to, the founding principles of these organizations.

If your daughter, son, or student has attempted to join or has claimed to affiliate with any Greek Letter organization or fraternal organization that is not officially represented as a member on campus, please note that said organization may not be officially recognized by Greek Council – nor represents their interests to the student body in Halifax. Furthermore, these groups may not be connected or affiliated with any national or international fraternity which is part of the Greek Council. Halifax Greek Council does not condone students who choose to join these groups as they are not official members of the Halifax Greek Community, and that parents discourage their students from joining them as well. Membership in any unrecognized Fraternity or Sorority does not pertain to any part thereof for Halifax Greek Council/Greek Life.

There are additional risks associated with joining an unrecognized or underground group. An unrecognized or underground group will not have the ability to provide liability insurance coverage to its officers or members. As a result, any incident that occurs that causes damage to university campus property, private property, or cause injury to one’s self or others will be the responsibility of a parent or guardian’s home owner’s insurance to cover damages resulting from the action(s) of any individual(s) that is found to be identified as being a member of an unrecognized organization – nor does Halifax Greek Council speak on their behalf. Additionally, any student identified as being a member of an unrecognized group may be in violation of the trademark rights of a National or International fraternal/Greek life organization and may be subject to criminal charges.
