The Gorgades were a race of hairy humanoids who according to the Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder in his Natural History inhabited certain islands west of Africa in the Atlantic Ocean. The Carthaginian navigator Hanno was said to have visited them in the fifth or sixth century B.C.[1] They were often mentioned in medieval bestiaries, which especially focused on the hairiness of the females.[2]
