The black-legged parrot (Pionites xanthomerius), also known as the western white-bellied parrot, is a parrot species of the genus Pionites in the family Psittacidae.[1] The species is native to eastern Peru, western Brazil, and northern Bolivia, although it may have been extirpated from Santa Cruz as a result of habitat destruction.[2] The three species Pionites leucogaster (green-thighed parrot), Pionites xanthomerius (black-legged parrot), and Pionites xanthurus (yellow-tailed parrot)[3] were previously lumped as Pionites leucogaster[4][5]. The IOC World Bird List still considers it to be a subspecies of the green-thighed parrot (Pionites leucogaster xanthomerius).[6]
