The Royal Dutch Touring Club ANWB (Dutch: Koninklijke Nederlandse Toeristenbond ANWB), known simply as ANWB (pronounced [aːʔɛnʋeːˈbeː] ), is a travellers' association in the Netherlands, supporting all modes of travel. It is responsible for traffic signs and signage on roads and trails. It also provides test reports, travel services and roadside assistance and is comparable to the German ADAC and the British Automobile Association (AA).
ANWB has over four million members, and is the largest not-for-profit association in the Netherlands.[1]
History
The ANWB was founded on 1 July 1883 as the Nederlandsche Vélocipèdisten Bond ("Dutch Velocipedists' Association"), but was renamed Algemene Nederlandse Wielrijdersbond (ANWB; "General Dutch Cyclists' Association") two years later. The name Koninklijke Nederlandse Toeristenbond ("Royal Dutch Touring Club") was adopted in 1905.
During the 20th century, the association expanded to include motorists, hikers, equestrians and motorcyclists, as well as participants in water sports, winter sports and camping.
