Smith joined Harry Potts' Blackpool on loan from Middlesbrough in January 1976. He made his first start for the club on 31 January, in a 2–2 draw with Hull City at Bloomfield Road. He scored his first goal for the club two games later, the second in a 2–0 home victory over Oxford United.
