Independents took half of the seats, but did not win an overall majority

Elections to the Moray District Council took place in May 1988, alongside elections to the councils of Scotland's various other districts. The number of seats and the total vote share won by each party is listed below.[1]

  Independent: 9 seats, 36.9%
  SNP: 7 seats, 45.4%
  Labour: 2 seats, 8.5%
  Conservative: 0 seats, 8.1%
  SLD: 0 seats, 1.4%

Voter turnout was 44.8%.
