Atanas Tarev
Atanas Kirilov Tarev (Bulgarian: Атанас Кирилов Търев; born January 31, 1958 in Plovdiv Province) is a retired pole vaulter from Bulgaria. He won a bronze medal at the inaugural World Championships in 1983, and won the European Indoor Championships in 1986. The same year he jumped 5.80 meters, a personal best.
After ending his career in sport, Tarev starts several businesses, getting involved in a number of suspicious deals. He has multiple close connections with politicians, including his own son, who currently serves his second term as one of the youngest Municipal Counselor in Bulgaria. Tarev's personal bodyguard and right hand man Trifon Mishovski was charged in 2009 with fraud and racketeering, together with the personal driver of the Plovdiv mayor at the time Slavcho Atanasov.
