Doug Barthel is an American politician and former law enforcement officer serving as a member of the South Dakota House of Representatives from the 10th district. Barthel assumed office in 2017 and previously served as the police chief in the Sioux Falls Police Department. He also worked as a public affairs specialist at Sanford Health.[1][2][3]

On his work at the legislature, Barthel professes to trust the legislative process, claiming “there are so many checks and balances along the way” to ensure the quality of the acts adopted. He also sees the benefits of keeping a good relationship with the media as a way to "get your message out" and gauge the reaction. Barthel also sees lobbyists as a "great resource” and experts in their respective fields. “They’re certainly a key part of the whole process.”[4]
