A product of the Manchester City youth scheme, he made his first team debut in the 1980-81 season, becoming the first black goalkeeper to play in the top division of English football. Succeeding Joe Corrigan in the City goal, he made a total of 125 appearances in six years, including two consecutive seasons where he played every match. He later played for Queen of the South and Port Vale. He retired in 1986 following a back injury.

Williams was awarded the MBE in the 2002 New Years Honours list[1] for his services to young people.[2]

Williams now works as the Executive Manager of City In The Community, Manchester City's community programme.[3]
