Alexander Mayes (1859-1941) was a builder and politician who was mayor of Toowoomba, Queensland in 1896, 1903, and 1917. Born in Largo in Fifeshire, Scotland in 1859, he moved to Toowoomba in June 1886 at the age of 26. He spent 35 years in Toowoomba, becoming a prominent builder and being active in local politics. He left Toowoomba in 1922 for New South Wales, and returned to Scotland in 1926, where he died in 1941.[1]
