The American Century Championship is the "premier" celebrity golf tournament,[citation needed] held during the second full week of July at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course in Stateline, Nevada, on the shores of Lake Tahoe. The course is at the southeast shore of Lake Tahoe, at an average elevation exceeding 6,230 feet (1,900 m) above sea level.

History

The first tournament was held in 1990 and sponsored by NBC, which broadcasts the second and third round coverage on the weekend. Starting in 1991, Isuzu sponsored the tournament until 1998. American Century Investments is the current title sponsor since 1999.

From 1990 to 2003, the tournament used a stroke play format. Starting in 2004, the modified Stableford format has been used.

Rick Rhoden (8), Dan Quinn (5), Billy Joe Tolliver (4) and Jack Wagner (2) and Mark Rypien (2) are the five celebrities who have won the tournament more than once. Actor Wagner is the only non-professional athlete to have won the event.
