An Universal Biographical and Historical Dictionary (London, 1800) was a landmark book written and published by British author John Watkins.
Reception
The book was typical of its day and of its genre. Many similar books were also produced at the same time such as Alexander Chalmers' General Biographical Dictionary. However John Watkins' book focused on academic figures, statesmen and royalty of the time.
His book went through several editions, which is evidence of its popularity among 19th century readers.
The book was also translated into several languages, including French and German.
