Annelisa Dora Deborah Weiland (born 15 February 1949), popularly as Annelisa Weiland, is a South African actress and writer.[1] She is best known for the roles in the films Meerkat Maantuig, Die Sonvreter, Wild Maneuvres and role "Hilda de Kock" SABC2 soapie 7de Laan for 19 consecutive years.[2][3][4][5]

Personal life

Weiland was born on 15 February 1949 in Sea Point, Cape Town, South Africa and grew up in Durbanville.[6] Her father, Ewald Paul Weiland from Bielefeld in Germany at the age of 22 to help install textile machinery. Her mother was Stienie Hoogenhout Goosen. After initially returning to Germany, her father later settled in South Africa.[7][8]

She had a seven-year relationship with fellow director, Ken Leach. Then she married Oubaas van Zyl, but later divorced.[9][10]

Career

In 1966, she matriculated from the Durbanville Hoërskool. During this period, she was the head girl and then attended drama classes conducted by Babs Laker. She later graduated from the University of Cape Town in drama. In 1969, she made the debut film in Strindberg’s film The Father. Then in 1970, she acted in the Dieter Reible’s theatre version of Titus Andronicus. After that success, she made another theatre play as "Ophelia" in the play Hamlet produced by Robert Mohr.[7][11][12]

In 1971, she was nominated for the Three Leaf Award for Best Supporting Actress for Titus Andronicus. In 1973, she started acting for PACT. In 1974, she became a permanent member of PACT Afrikaans company TRUK. She continued to work with them until 1977. In 1978, she won the Artes Award for Best Actress for the role in the film Die Koster.[13] In 1993, she won the DALRO Award for Best Supporting Actress on the Afrikaans stage for Mirakel.[7][2]

In 2000, she made debut television role with the soap opera 7de Laan directed by Danie Odendaal.[14][15] In the serial, she played the role "Hilda de Kock" which became the turning point in her television career.[16] She continued to play the role for 19 consecutive years until her retirement in 2019.[17][18][19] In 2014, she won the Tempo Award for Best Soap Actress of the Year for her role in 7de Laan.[20][2] Apart from that, she worked with radio play and rendered her voice in the Afrikaans version of the Japanese animated television series.[7] Some of her other notable television roles are: as "Paddy van Heerden" in Die Vierde Kabinet, as "Cornelia" in Elke Skewe Pot, as "Annetjie" in Lui Maar Op, Belinda, as "Meemee" in Mense Mense, as "Katharina Vosloo" in Suidooster and as "Priscilla" in Triptiek.>[21][22][23]
