North American telephone area code 540 serves the northwestern portion of the Commonwealth of Virginia including the communities of Blacksburg, Buchanan, Buena Vista, Cave Spring, Fredericksburg, Franklin County, Greenville, Harrisonburg, King George, Lexington, Madison, Roanoke, Salem, Staunton, and Winchester, as well as most of Culpeper, Stafford, Spotsylvania, Rockbridge, Orange, Louisa, Fauquier, Rappahannock and Shenandoah counties. It also serves western Loudoun County, most of which is in area code 703.

It was established July 15, 1995 as a split from area code 703. It was then itself split on September 1, 2001 to create area code 276.
