Arenal Botanical Gardens are on the shore of Lake Arenal in northwest Costa Rica. They are on the east side of the lake approximately 2 kilometers north of the village of Unión, Guanacaste. Opened in 1991, the garden displays hundreds of tropical plant species and colorful flower varieties. There is also a notable butterfly garden and hummingbird sanctuary.[1]

In recent years,[when?] the gardens have fallen into disrepair; they are now in poor condition.
