Artisan peanut butter usually refers to peanut butter which is preservative and additive-free and handmade in a cottage industry-style setup.

History

Jesse Frank Ford of Arrowhead Mills, who was an advocate for natural foods, started making peanut butter in 1970[1]. Arrowhead Mills was founded in 1960 by Frank Ford. Ford was interested in maintaining soil nutrition without pesticides and mass-grinding grains. Ford sold Arrowhead Mills to the Hain Celestial Group in 1999. Today’s Arrowhead Mills peanut butter is reputed to be made no differently than other major brands.[2]
