Awa Province (Chiba)
Appearance
Awa (安房国; -no kuni) was an old province of Japan which is today a part of Chiba Prefecture. Awa Province was bordered by Kazusa Province. It lies on the tip of the Boso Peninsula, whose name (房総半島) takes its first kanji from the name of Awa Province and its second from Kazusa and Shimousa Provinces.
Established in 718 from the division of Kazusa. It was composed of four districts: Asai, Awa, Heguri and Nagasa. The capital was placed in Heguri District. Though the site has never been discovered, it is supposed to be near Miyoshi, Chiba.
