Blue Hills is a census-designated place located in Hartford County, Connecticut. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 3,020.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 3.0 km² (1.1 mi²). 3.0 km² (1.1 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there were 3,020 people, 1,008 households, and 782 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,022.8/km² (2,643.7/mi²). There were 1,044 housing units at an average density of 353.6/km² (913.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 9.80% White, 83.11% African American, 0.40% Native American, 1.23% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.49% from other races, and 3.94% from two or more races. 4.07% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 1,008 households out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.9% were married couples living together, 28.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.4% were non-families. 19.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.89 and the average family size was 3.29.
In the CDP the population was spread out with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 25.6% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 82.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.1 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $48,859, and the median income for a family was $52,361. Males had a median income of $36,842 versus $30,972 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $21,618. 8.7% of the population and 3.9% of families were below the poverty line. 14.6% of those under the age of 18 and 13.1% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
In 2000, 23.9% of Blue Hills residents identified as being of Jamaican heritage. This was the highest percentage of Jamaican Americans of any place in the country.
