Bremnes Church (Norwegian: Bremnes kirke) is a parish church in Bømlo municipality in Hordaland county, Norway. It is located in the village of Svortland on the island of Bømlo. The church is part of the Bremnes parish in the Sunnhordland deanery in the Diocese of Bjørgvin.[1][2]

History

The first church here was a medieval stave church located in the nearby farm area of Gåsland (across the lake from the present location). Historically, the church was called Gåsland Church (spelled Gaasland). This church was first mentioned in historical records in 1327, but it was old at that time. The stave church was demolished in 1689 and a new wooden church was built in the same place of Oluff Bysemb. In 1869, a new, larger church was built on the present site to the south. It was designed by the architect Jacob Wilhelm Nordan and it was consecrated on 16 September 1869. This new white, wooden church was built to seat about 750 people.[3]
