Bure Equity was established in 1992 as a result of the decision to dismantle the Swedish government owned Employees Fund, a socialist version of a SWF. The fund was listed on the local stock market in 1993 and subsequently sold to the private sector.

Currently, it is a wholly owned private sector investment company involved in a number of sectors, including communications, textiles, training, education and finance. the largest shareholding being Vitrolife and Mycronic.
