Central Manchester is a census-designated place and census district located in the town of Manchester in Hartford County, Connecticut. As of the 2000 census, the district had a total population of 30,595.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the district has a total area of 16.8 km² (6.5 mi²). 16.7 km² (6.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.46% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 30,595 people, 13,080 households, and 7,586 families residing in the district. The population density was 1,831.4/km² (4,740.7/mi²). There were 13,640 housing units at an average density of 816.5/km² (2,113.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the district was 83.20% White, 8.30% African American, 0.21% Native American, 2.41% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 3.35% from other races, and 2.48% from two or more races. 6.96% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 13,080 households out of which 27.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.0% were married couples living together, 13.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 42.0% were non-families. 32.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.97.

In the district, the population was spread out with 23.4% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 33.3% from 25 to 44, 20.1% from 45 to 64, and 14.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 92.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.9 males.

The median income for a household in the district was $43,977, and the median income for a family was $53,979. Males had a median income of $39,913 versus $30,218 for females. The per capita income for the district was $22,656. 9.4% of the population and 6.8% of families were below the poverty line. 13.3% of those under the age of 18 and 8.1% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
