Charmed

Charmed is an American television series reboot based on the 1998s series of the same name. Set to air on The CW, the new series is being developed by Jennie Urman, Jessica O’Toole and Amy Rardin, and Brad Silberling. The reboot will revolve around the three sisters in a college town who discover they are witches and face "vanquishing supernatural demons, tearing down the patriarchy and maintaining familial bonds."[1] The pilot will be written by Jane the Virgin writers Jessica O'Toole and Amy Rardin, and is based on a story by Urman.

Development

On January 5, 2017, it was announced that The CW network was working on a new reboot of Charmed by Jane the Virgin creator Jennie Snyder Urman.[2] The original pilot script was going to be set in 1976 about three witches (Tina, Paige and Annie) not related by blood, who are brought together to fight evil in a small New England town.[3][4] At the time, The CW president Mark Pedowitz stated that it would not be a prequel to the original series, and described the reboot as "a self-contained, self-sustained" and "very standalone show."[5] However, on February 3, 2017, The Hollywood Reporter announced that the reboot would be redeveloped and delayed until the 2018–19 season, as the draft script "didn't come in the way the network had hoped" and that Urman, who was busy with Jane the Virgin, did not have enough time to fully commit to the reboot for the 2017–18 season.[6] Pedowitz gave an update on the reboot during the Television Critics Association summer press tour in August 2017, saying that it was still in the redevelopment process and that the network was waiting to see what Urman had come up with for the redeveloped script.[7] In December 2017, it was revealed that The CW had passed on their development of another witch-themed series, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, to focus more on redeveloping the Charmed reboot.[8]

On January 25, 2018, The CW officially ordered the Charmed reboot to pilot. The redeveloped script will now be set in the present day and has been described as "a fierce, funny, feminist reboot" centered on "three sisters in a college town who discover they are witches."[1] The reboot will revolve around the sisters "vanquishing supernatural demons, tearing down the patriarchy and maintaining familial bonds."[1] The pilot will be written by Jane the Virgin writers Jessica O'Toole and Amy Rardin, and is based on a story by Urman. The trio are executive producers of the reboot alongside Ben Silverman and Brad Silberling, who will also direct the pilot.[9]

Casting

On February 7, 2018, TVLine revealed the reboot's casting breakdowns, with the three witches bearing the unofficial names of Macy and two sisters, Mel and Madison Pruitt.[10] The eldest witch Macy is "a witty, intense science nerd" with the power of telekinesis. Macy has reasons to believe that she is related to the Pruitt sisters. Mel is a "strong-willed feminist" and lesbian with the power of time-freezing, while her younger sister Madison is an "athletic college student" with the power to hear people's thoughts.[10] Ser'Darius Blain has been cast as Macy's "documentary filmmaker-boyfriend" Galvin.[11] Casting is also underway for the trio's "devilishly handsome" advisor/whitelighter Harry, Mel's detective girlfriend Soo Jin, and Madison's "sensitive loner ex-beau" Brian.[10]
