Chris Derrick has the fastest high school only 5k of all time (besting numerous Olympians and American/world record-holders in the process) and has now also beat Olympian Galen Rupp's national junior record in the 5K (and at the same time beating "notable" runner German Fernandez. Derrick is clearly an elite junior runner on the world stage, arguably as much as Fernandez. I think it is ludicrous to suggest he's non-notable. Chris Derrick is an American distance running legend and junior American record holder in the 5000 meters. Derrick's storied career has earned him the title as the head of the class of 2008 triumvirate which includes the less accomplished German Fernandez and Luke Puskedra. As a high school senior, Derrick's legend rocketed to other worldly dimensions when he demolished the famed Detweiler course record (on the lengthened version of the course) and surpassing the greatness of Craig Virgin the only American to ever win a World Cross Country Championship. During track season Derrick ran an unprecedented time in the 5000m clocking 13:55 at the prestigious Arcadia Invitational making him the fastest high school 5K runner ever in a high school only race. Derrick's senior season was punctuated with awards including the winner of the Nike Cross-Country Nationals, a runner up finish in the Footlocker Cross Country Championships and the Gatorade Athlete of the decade award. Derrick is listed on ESPN as the greatest high school athlete of the modern era.[1] He is currently a freshman at Stanford University.
