Code 49, also known as USS-49, is a barcode symbology.
It encodes 128-character ASCII and has found use in healthcare, pharmaceutical, laboratory and electronics industries.
It was developed in 1987 by Intermec with the goal of being an "ultra high density" barcode. Fundamentally, Code 49 consists of multiple 1D barcodes, based on Code 39, stacked side-by-side (nominally, between 2 and 8 total bars) and separated by thin divider lines to create a larger 2D pattern.
