The Contaminated Land Assessment and Remediation Research Centre (CLARRC) was a multi-disciplinary centre of excellence based in the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, from 1998 until 2010. CLARRC was a focus for collaboration between different institutions and aimed to encourage engagement between industry and Scottish Higher Education Institutions.

History

The Contaminated Land Assessment and Remediation Research Centre was founded in June 1998 by the University of Edinburgh, Napier University and the Scottish Universities' Research & Reactor Centre (SURRC) with seed funding from the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council (SHEFC). In 2006, CLARRC Director Colin Cunningham transformed the centre into the Scottish Environmental Technology Network (SETN) to provide specialist support to SMEs in the emerging Scottish Environmental and Clean Technology (ECT) sector. SETN moved to the University of Strathclyde (Glasgow) and served as the hub of the ECT sector in Scotland supporting a membership of around 250 SMEs. The Scottish Government rejected proposals to grow SETN and despite protests from industry the unit was closed in 2014.
