Dale A. Kimball (born November 28, 1939)[1] was confirmed as a judge for United States district court for the District of Utah by the United States Senate on November 24, 1997.[2]

Kimball is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and has served in many positions within the church, including as a Regional representative of the Twelve, a stake president, a high councilor and a bishop.[3]

Starting in 2009, the third competency hearing on whether Brian David Mitchell should stand trial for the kidnapping of Elizabeth Smart was held before Kimball. Mitchell was found competent to proceed to trial by Kimball on Monday, March 1, 2010.[4] Mitchell was later found guilty in December 2010.[citation needed]

Early Life and Education

Kimball grew up on a diary farm in Draper Utah where he learned the value of hard work and responsibility. He also worked in the fields during the day where his family grew alfalfa, sugar beets, and grain. He continued to work on the family farm throughout his schooling including while he was attending law school. Kimball first became interested in law while taking a commercial law class from E.L. Crawford at Jordan High School.[5] Kimball received a BS in Political Science from Brigham Young University in 1964 and a Juris Doctor in 1967 from University of Utah Law School.[6] While attending law school Kimball was part of the Phi Kappa Phi Fraternity along with being the Case Note Editor of the Utah Law Review, Order of the Coif, and finished second in his class.

Legal Career

After graduating law school Kimball began his legal practice at Van Cott, Bagley, Cornwall & McCarthy in Salt Lake City, Utah from 1967 to 1974. After working for this firm several years he became a Professor of Law at J. Reuben Clark School of Law at Brigham Young University from 1974 to 1976. In 1975 Kimball cut his teaching to a part time professor and was a cofounder of the Kimball, Parr Waddoups, Brown & Gee in Salt Lake City. On 24 November 1997 Kimball became a Federal Judge in the United States District Court for the District of Utah.[7]

Judical Career and Community Service

Kimball became a judge of the U.S. District Court of the District of Utah on 24 November 1997. He was appointed by [William J. Clinton] on September 4, 1997, the seat was vacated by [David Keith Winder]. Kimball received senior status on 30 November 2009.[8] Kimball has served the community of Utah throughout his life and been on many different boards and committee's.
