Dermigraphic is a professional or medical term for a tattoo or dermal pigmentation consisting of a design applied by an artist into the dermis of a subject. Prior to the 1990s, tattooing was viewed as a sub-cultural activity. As the art grew through the 1990s, younger, more artistic people began to tattoo. Most of these artists prefer to be called dermigraphic artist rather than tattooist. With tattoos increasingly becoming popular through the 21st century, many newer studios are referred to as a dermigraphic studio, sounding more appealing to the professional community than a Tattoo Shop or Tattoo Parlor.
