Gajapati Maharaj Shri Dibyasingha Deb is the "adhyasevak"(chief servitor) of Lord Jagannath.[3] The "adhyasevak" of Lord Jagannath [4] is also identified as the Thakur Raja of Puri.[5] According to some customs he is also considered to be the living reflection of the Lord.

Dibyasingha Deb ascended the throne in the year 1970 after the death of his father the then Maharaja of Puri, Birakishore Deb at the age of 17. ।.[6] Gajapati Maharaja before taking the titular name of Dibyasingha Deb was named Jenamani Kamanarab Deb.
