Digitec Galaxus is a Swiss retail company in the home electronics sector and operates the digitec and Galaxus webshops as well as 9 department stores in Switzerland. The company was founded in 2001 and the Migros group, Switzerland's largest retailer, acquired a majority stake in the company in 2012.[4] The voting ratio on the board between Migros and the three founders remains 50:50[5]

History

Marcel Dobler (who sold his shares in 2014),[6] Oliver Herren, Florian Teuteberg, then students, established the digitec brand and the webshop with an adjoining store at Technopark Zürich in 2001, with the goal to offer a wide range of IT products, service and support at moderate prices. The concept was followed by several renovations to expand the warehouse and the sales area. The partnership was incorporated in January 2005 to form the digitec Aktiengesellschaft according to Swiss law. In August 2006 a central warehouse was established in Kleindöttingen that was replaced in spring 2009 by the logistics centre in Wohlen AG. In 2010 Galaxus was launched to provide an updated online shop with a range including household items, toys and sports articles. In 2011 the first store in Western Switzerland was opened in Lausanne, and the warehouse surface area in Wohlen was expanded to 18,000 square metres (193,750 sq ft). Another expansion to 32,000 square metres (344,445 sq ft) followed in 2015. The company employs around 570 people.[2] In 2014 the brands digitec and Galaxus merged to form Galaxus (Switzerland).[7]

The value of the former Galaxus AG was estimated to be CHF 120 million[8] in May 2012. In June 2012 the Migros group acquired 30% of the company, which operated the then separated digitec and Galaxus. Migros decided to honour the option on the majority per end of 2015.

On 2 September 2015 the mother company Galaxus (Schweiz) AG was renamed in Digitec Galaxus AG[9] that operates the online shops digitec and GALAXUS. Now, both shops have been reintegrated into the company's name.[2]

Range

Digitec Galaxus claims to be Switzerland's online market leader in the fields of IT, consumer electronics and telecommunication. The Galaxus brand is the online shop division and also sells household, DIY, garden and sports equipment.[10]
