Dr. Kildare's Strange Case is a 1940 American film directed by Harold S. Bucquet. This was the fifth of a total of ten Dr. Kildare pictures.
Plot
Dr. James Kildare gets competition for the heart of nurse Mary Lamont from wealthy brain surgeon Dr. Gregory Lane. Kildare has not proposed to Mary because of his poor financial situation. Kildare's mentor, Dr. Leonard Gillespie, arranges for him to be offered a prestigious, well-paid job at the Messenger Institute, but Kildare decides to continue working with his inspiring mentor, Dr. Leonard Gillespie. As a result, Mary gives up all hope of marrying Kildare.
Kildare and Lane are put together on a case involving a man with a skull fracture, and Lane, who has lost too many of his patients on the operating table recently, wants James to perform the urgently needed surgery instead. James persuades Lane to operate, but when the patient wakes up, he shows clear signs of insanity, putting Lane's career in jeopardy.
Kildare is convinced that the man was mentally ill before the accident which fractured his skull, and risks his own career by trying to trying a dangerous, experimental "insulin shock" treatment. He succeeds. After questioning the patient, Kildare finds the man's estranged wife. He had lost his sanity due to their separation five years ago. Seeing the couple reunited makes James propose to Mary, and she accepts.
