Ting Chen, born in 1968 in Shanghai, China, was the chairman of the board of directors of the Wikimedia Foundation in 2010-2012.
Ting Chen was born in Shanghai in 1968. He grew up in Harbin, in northeast China.
He went to the Technical University of Braunschweig, Germany to study electrical engineering in 1989. Specialized in semiconductors, he graduated in 1993 and worked as a computer scientist in Mainz. He managed a forum for introducing scientific knowledge on FidoNet in German for many years. He discovered the German Wikimedia projects in 2003 and got involved early in the young Chinese Wikipedia. Ting Chen took part in the first Wikimania in 2005 in Frankfurt and helped organize the third in 2007 in Taipei.
After being appointed trustee by the Wikimedia community in June 20082, he was elected president of the Wikimedia Foundation in July 2010. His term ended two years later.
