East Granby, Connecticut
East Granby is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut. As of the 2000 census, the town had a population of 4,745.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 45.5 km² (17.6 mi²). 45.3 km² (17.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.46% water.
In the middle of the town is the Metacomet Ridge, a tall, rocky spine of land that once was the Western border of Lake Hitchcock.To the east of this is Salisbury Plain,and to the west flows Salmon Brook. The south of the town is bordered by the swift flowing Farmington River, whose water levels were risen severely during the Northeast Flooding of October 2005, flooding certain areas of the town with up to 2 feet of water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there were 4,745 people, 1,848 households, and 1,354 families residing in the town. The population density was 104.8/km² (271.5/mi²). There were 1,903 housing units at an average density of 42.0/km² (108.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 95.60% White, 1.37% African American, 0.13% Native American, 1.05% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.65% from other races, and 1.20% from two or more races. 1.52% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 1,848 households out of which 35.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.8% were married couples living together, 7.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.7% were non-families. 22.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the town the population was spread out with 26.1% under the age of 18, 4.5% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 27.1% from 45 to 64, and 11.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 96.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.8 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $68,696, and the median income for a family was $77,621. Males had a median income of $48,992 versus $37,450 for females. The per capita income for the town was $30,805. 1.5% of the population and 0.9% of families were below the poverty line. 0.6% of those under the age of 18 and 3.2% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
